We visited the Royal Oak Farmers Market (ROFM) on Saturday for a change of pace (instead of Detroit’s Eastern Market) (EM) and I am so glad we did!  First of all, I had no idea that ROFM was open  year round!  That’s awesome!  It is closer to home than EM - and for quick produce buying its a big win!  EM has the added advantage of Hirts… and of course, the Gratiot Central Meat Market - which frankly I just can’t live completely without.  Ronnie’s has without a doubt the best kabobs around, and Wigley’s - you haven’t had corned beef at home until you have cooked up a Wigley’s corned beef.

Back to ROFM…  Couple of really exciting things.  Pearl Dove’s Sustaining Foods - I bought some of their Swiss Breakfast - OMG AWESOME.   It’s this great granola and fruit mix… when you get it home you mix their mix with some vanilla yogurt and some soy milk.. and just toss it in yer fridge… and bingo!  breakfast for a week!  I am on day 2 of this stuff.. and it just keeps getting better each day!

Another exciting thing was meeting the lady from Maitland Family Farm.   Can you say pasture fed, chemical and hormone free beef - raised right here in Michigan?!?!  Does it get any better than this?  Their cattle is born right here on their farm - like the cattles parents, and grandparents!  None of this shipping it in and feeding it grass for 8 weeks and calling it natural!  This is the real deal folks!  And they will have their beef at the market starting the first Saturday in May!

I’m really going to make an effort this year to eat more local items and not only be healthier because of it.. but support the local economy as well.  You should too!
